A mysterious parasite outbreak is rapidly spreading across the United States, leaving public health officials scrambling to identify the source.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cases of Cyclospora infections are climbing sharply across dozens of states, with the Midwest currently serving as the epicenter of the surge.

The Epicenter: Michigan and Ohio Hit Hardest

Public health data reveals that the outbreak has taken a significant foothold in two major states:

• Michigan: More than 1,000 confirmed cases.

• Ohio: More than 500 confirmed cases.

Despite the skyrocketing numbers, investigators have yet to pinpoint the exact food item, water source, or environmental factor driving the infection.

What is Cyclospora? The Symptoms to Watch For

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that causes an intestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis. The infection is typically consumed through food or water contaminated with feces.

The CDC warns that the hallmark symptom of the infection is watery, often “explosive” diarrhea. If left untreated, the illness can become a grueling ordeal, with symptoms lasting for weeks or even months.

Other common symptoms include:

• Frequent bowel movements

• Loss of appetite and weight loss

• Stomach cramps, bloating, and increased gas

• Nausea and fatigue

• Low-grade fever

CDC Health Note: While the symptoms can be severe and debilitating, health officials have confirmed that no deaths have been reported in connection with this current outbreak.

What is Being Done?

State and federal investigators are currently interviewing patients to find common threads in what they ate or drank before falling ill. Past Cyclospora outbreaks in the U.S. have frequently been linked to imported fresh produce, such as raspberries, basil, cilantro, and various types of lettuce.

For now, health officials urge anyone experiencing prolonged gastrointestinal distress to seek medical attention immediately. Cyclosporiasis can be easily diagnosed with a specific stool test and is highly treatable with a standard course of antibiotics.
